Lou Holtz is one of the all-time great American football coaches,
having resurrected ailing football teams at William and Mary, North
Carolina State, Arkansas, Minnesota. Perhaps Coach Holtz is most well
known for his winning records at Notre Dame. These days he coaches at
South Carolina and is developing an impressive program there as well. He
is truly a phenomenal motivator and coach!
One of the guiding principles in Lou's winning philosophy is his commitment
to three core values. It is his recipe for winning and for inspiring his
players to be successful, both on the playing field and in life. He does it by
simply being the catalyst to improve the self-image of others. You may not
have an entire team to inspire, but we all have people we want to encourage
and lift up.
Here are Lou's three core values a leader can use to improve self-image and
turn the ordinary people into extraordinary ones:
1. TRUST: Do what is right to build trust.
2. COMMITMENT: Simply, do your best. Show up.
3. CARING: Care deeply about the wellbeing of others.
The key point here is that Coach Holtz invests in the GROWTH (which is a
journey) of his players, not merely the GOAL (which is a destination) of
winning games. He focuses on individuals and makes the distinction that
SUCCESS is adding value to yourself, whereas SIGNIFICANCE is adding value to
others.
What can you do today to improve the self-image of someone you know? Build

for the changes that come.
