Creativity - Your Key to Success
By Harriet Meyerson
You may have already heard this wise saying …
"If you keep doing what you've always been doing, You're going to
keep getting what you've always been getting."
If you're frustrated in any area of your life, or if you're just simply
bored, it makes sense that you have to do something different to
experience happiness and success. The more options you have, the better
chance you have to find solutions to your problems. You can discover
unlimited options with creative thinking.
Reclaim your creativity.
You were born with limitless creativity. Somewhere along the line
well-meaning parents and teachers stifled you. The good news is that
creativity is a skill you can re-learn.
FIVE WAYS TO BECOME MORE CREATIVE
Get out of your routine.
Get comfortable with creativity by changing the little things. People tend
to get stuck in comfortable ways of doing things, so in preparation for
creativity, start doing simple everyday things differently.
- Change your morning routine - for example, eat first and then
shower.
- Drive a different way to work each day.
- Cook some new recipes for dinner.
- Do something to have fun every day.
Take some improvisation classes.
- Improvisation develops creativity.
- It's both fun and exciting.
- It helps you think on your feet and become more spontaneous.
Your local adult education program may have a class in improvisation.
Also check with local acting or theater groups. The best thing about
improv is that you can't do anything wrong.
Play the "Objects" game.
Have fun at home playing this game with your family. It will help develop
everyone's creativity.
Think of an ordinary object such as a
- paper clip
- pencil or
- marble
Next, try to find as many imaginative and outrageous uses for it as you
can think of. Use your creativity to make your objects large change their
shapes, or use lots of them. Keep a list of your ideas and add to it all
week as you think of different uses for your chosen object. Each week take
a different object and think of imaginative ways to use it.
Draw a picture.
Drawing a picture of your problem and the possible solutions will help
wake up the right (creative) side of your brain.
Borrow your child's box of crayons and draw a picture. The brain thinks
in pictures, not words. If you can see the problem drawn on paper, you are
more likely to be able to identify the real problem and use your creative
thinking to draw possible solutions.
Brainstorm.
When you're looking for a solution to a problem, start by writing down
everything that comes into your mind, whether it's realistic or not.
Pretty soon the ideas will start to flow. At work, ask your coworkers to
help you brainstorm solutions to a problem.
What will happen if you don't use creativity?
Without creativity, you are destined not only to boredom, but also to the
trauma of experiencing the same difficulties over and over. With
creativity your life becomes an exciting adventure of limitless
possibilities and continuous success.
